The Base@Belmont celebrated Youth Week at this year’s Fab Fun Day Out with scooters and skateboards in tow. The free all ages event was held at Belmont Skatepark where the Y and the City of Belmont put on quite a show, presenting a bucking bull, obstacle course, DJ, photobooth and much more.
The event engaged members of the local community who came together to enjoy the free barbecue, fairy floss and snow cones, animals at Old McDonald’s farm, face painting and even have their picture drawn by a caricature artist.
The Base@Belmont Youth Centre provides support for young people through a variety of activities and programs including the Project Y Youth Committee which aims to empower young people and provide them with the opportunity to have a voice in the decision-making process within their local community. Project Y put on Fab Fun Day Out as part of Youth Week, breaking down barriers experienced by young people allowing them to engage with their local community in a fun, free and safe environment.
“Youth week is a great opportunity for our project Y committee to plan and deliver a whole community event”, explained Youth Worker at the Base, Caroline Smith.
“Project Y worked extremely hard this term planning and coordinating. They spent the day on the food station engaging with the community members and were extremely polite and friendly while handing out popcorn and fairy floss.”
The project Y committee and the team at the Base were thrilled with the turn out on the day with over 400 members of the community in attendance.
